Nick Gummeson was born and raised in Kemptville, Ontario where he grew up playing competitive soccer and hockey, in addition to his musical studies in piano and classical voice. He graduated from the University of Ottawa, receiving degrees in music and education with specializations in English and music aimed at students in grades 7 through 12. Upon completion of his Bachelor of Education degree in 2008, he was appointed the Director of Music at Elmwood School, one of the premiere K-12 independent schools in the Ottawa valley and surrounding regions.
During his 9 years at Elmwood, he developed a National level music program that specialized in advanced musical pedagogy (including jazz studies, improvisation, classical composition and analysis) and experiential learning that was geared towards developing confident, capable musicians. In 2016, Elmwood School was the recipient of the Capital Region Music Festival’s “Most Outstanding Band” award, and since the 2015-16 school year, 9 of his ensembles received invitations to participate in the jazz and concert band divisions of the national band competition known as “Musicfest Canada”.
In addition to the conducting the Grade 5 band, Nick is very excited to be leading the Grade 8 Homeroom and teaching English in the Junior High division. As an English teacher, he is fascinated by the knowledge and life-lessons inherent in all fictional literature. He hopes to help students recognize value in actively developing their spoken and written fluency skills while recognizing the beautiful relationship that exists between all genres of the literary arts. As an educator, his highest priority is to create an exceptional individualized learning environment for each of his students which is predicated on developing open lines of communication between the student, teacher, and home.
