Junior Primary - Christianne Chappell & Shelby MacGregor
Ms. Chris graduated from Liverpool John Moores University in England with a BEd Hons degree in Primary Education specialising in PE. Whilst undertaking her degree, she realized her passion was working with the youngest students in school. Ms. Chris has now spent the last 18 years teaching children from 18 months to 7 years.
The Chappell family arrived in Nova Scotia in the Summer of 2015 and instantly fell in love with their new home. Prior to the move they spent 6 years living in Shanghai, China. During this time in Shanghai, Ms. Chris taught at The British International School, Pudong Campus, spending 3 years as Head of Early Years. It was during that time she was able to pursue her interest in ‘student initiated learning’ and, along with her amazing team, they adapted the learning environment to facilitate and develop this interesting approach to teaching and learning. This resulted In seeing young children achieving while following their interests and passions. Whilst in Shanghai, Ms. Chris was nominated by her school to attend a global seminar held in London focused on developing ‘Women Leaders in Global Education’ which she considers to be an honour and a privilege. Before the move to Shanghai, driven by her husband’s career as a Marine Engineer, Ms. Chris taught in two of the UK’s leading independent schools where she developed, enhanced and taught the programme for Nursery (Junior Primary) and Reception students (Grade Primary).
Ms. Chris is a big believer in developing ‘the whole child’ and that the formative years of a child’s education lay the foundations for all future learning. That being said, Ms. Chris knows this first experience MUST be a positive one and she takes that responsibility very seriously. Learning the basics for reading, writing and mathematics are critical to young learners, yet also developing independence, sharing toys and classroom resources and following class routines are also essential to effective learning. Both aspects of school life are a priority for Ms. Chris and her students.
In her spare time, Ms. Chris and her family love exploring her new province and particularly like to spend time walking their dog, skiing, ice skating, surfing at the beach and swimming in the wonderful lakes they have at our doorstep. Ms. Chris a lifelong supporter of Manchester City Football Club and plays soccer for the Halifax Greyhounds.
She is very excited to have the opportunity to establish herself at Bedford Academy and is looking forward to a great year with her Junior Primary homeroom.
This is Shelby’s first year at Bedford Academy. She graduated from Mount Saint Vincent University with a Bachelor of Arts Honors Degree in English and a double minor in History and Religious studies. She became a tutor for students at the university, specializing in English. This tutoring position blossomed into her running several writing workshops at the university, giving her a chance to work with a larger group of students with a variety of writing needs.
While she was at Mount Saint Vincent, she started working at the Fountain Play Center and discovered her love for working with young children. The day care and her passion for English inspired her to write her honors thesis on young adult fiction, which then transformed into her attending McMaster University for her Master’s Degree. She completed her Master’s Degree this year, and it has provided her with a wider knowledge of English literature. While there, she won the TA Award in recognition of excellence in teaching, an award she was nominated for by several of her students.
Shelby believes that every student can excel in English, and is passionate that each student tries their best. She also believes that some of the best learning comes from when her students can help teach each other, so she works tirelessly to create a classroom where all questions and ideas can be heard.
Shelby extends her passion outside of school to travel and physical fitness, believing that everyone should learn or experience something new each day.
