Bedford Academy prides itself in providing its students with a varied Extra-Curricular program encompassing both Athletics and the Fine Arts. The unveiling of the Academy Hall gymnasium in September of 2005 has taken the program to a new level. This multi million dollar facility addition to the school enables staff to provide a full range of both team and individual sports designed to maximize the physical development of each Academy student. The nurturing of a physically active lifestyle is a key within every grade level from the lower elementary grades to the senior students who make up our junior high population.
Each Bedford Academy student is placed in an Intramural House representing either Argyle, Fife, Moray or Lanark Houses. Through friendly competition and enthusiastic team spirit the children participate in weekly athletic contests. Each House is lead by two senior student leaders with support from teachers assigned to a specific House. Active participation is the primary goal with an emphasis on teamwork and leadership development. The four Houses vie for the famed Wallace Cup which is presented each year to the victorious house.
Bedford Academy provides an interscholastic tract within its Athletic program through the Bronco school teams and a number of sports related after school clubs. The Academy is a member of the Metro Basketball Association with Boys and Girls teams entered. Weekly practices and league games take place throughout the October to February season. The Academy Broncos compete provincially through Basketball Nova Scotia and annually enter the country's largest minor basketball tournament, the Bedford Classic. The Bedford Academy Girls and Boys Basketball teams have won many championships banners at both regional and provincial levels of competition. Cross country running is a well received club with student runners who participate in the Youth Running Series throughout the fall and spring closing with the nationally recognized Bluenose Marathon. Badminton is a very popular club activity under the direction of a provincially recognized coach. Bedford Academy is a member of the Nova Scotia Schools Athletic Federation (NSSAF). Student athletes from Bedford Academy have won Provincial Championships in track and field and cross country running.
Bedford Academy utilizes several nearby sporting locations as activity exploratories for the students. Scuba diving, golf, sailing, camping, skiing and tennis are seasonal sessions of the Athletic program open to interested students. Bedford Academy also provides a recreational ice hockey program on a weekly basis.
The Bedford Academy Fine Arts program focuses on several creative avenues. The Senior Band provides students with an introduction to a wide range of classical and contemporary music with performances in the famed Kiwanis Festival of Music as well as a full slate of local concert events. The younger students are invited to join our recorder group to prepare them for entry into the Band. Private voice, guitar and piano lessons are offered to all Academy students upon request through professionally trained instructors.
Artistic expression through a variety of mediums is a core aspect of the Academy's Creative Development program. The Annual Art Gala features students’ works under the direction of resident artist and faculty.
Drama is a cornerstone within the Academy Fine Arts program. All students from grades Three to Nine participate in our annual Shakespearian Festival each year.
